KOREAN WAR - 1950/2000

Korean War Campaign Streamer

Between 1895 and 1945, the Korean peninsula had been in the control of Japan. With the end of the Second World War, forces from the United States and the Soviet Union were sent to remove the Japanese, and it was expected that Korea would become a single, independent country.

Instead, with the onset of the Cold War, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into two countries. The northern half became the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, backed by the Soviet Union. The southern half became the Republic of Korea, with support from the United States.
